Reservation or not?

In his latest film Aarakshan, director Prakash Jha rakes up the controversial issue of caste-based reservation in education system.

The movie stars Amitabh Bachchan as an idealist principal of a college, Saif Ali Khan his disciple, Deepika Padukone Saif’s love interest and Big B’s daughter, and Manoj Bajpai as Big B’s adversary.

Like his previous films Gangajal and Apaharan, Jha raises pertinent issues plaguing the society over the years and throws open the moot question: should there be reservation to uplift the backward classes or should a person’s merit be the basis for education and employment.

The movie has already kicked up the controversy with some dalit organizations objecting to its content and labelling it “anti-dalit”. Jha, however, has tried to placate such apprehensions and maintained that the film doesn’t take a partial approach to the subject of reservation. The Censor Board too has cleared the film.
